For years, POTS lines have quietly supported critical systems across organizations, from elevator phones and fire panels to alarm systems and fax lines. Because they were reliable and largely untouched, they often remained out of sight and out of mind.


That is changing quickly.


Across the country, carriers are actively decommissioning legacy copper networks. This is not a distant transition or a gradual phase-out. It is already underway, and it is forcing organizations to make decisions sooner than expected.


This Is Not Just a Telecom Upgrade


POTS replacement is often viewed as a simple technology refresh, but the reality is broader. What is happening is a fundamental shift in how connectivity is delivered and supported.


Carriers are reducing investment in copper infrastructure while increasing costs to maintain it. Service levels are becoming less predictable, repair times are extending, and in many cases, new installations are no longer available. At the same time, pricing is rising significantly, not because of added value, but to encourage migration off legacy networks.


As a result, staying on POTS is becoming both more expensive and less viable.


The Risk Is in What You Don’t See


One of the biggest challenges is that many organizations do not have clear visibility into where POTS lines still exist or what they support.


These lines are often tied to systems that carry real operational and compliance implications, including life safety systems, elevator communications, and security infrastructure. When those connections fail or are no longer supported, the issue is not just technical. It can directly impact safety, compliance, and business continuity.


Replacing a line is straightforward. Understanding the full scope of dependency is where most organizations get caught off guard.


Timing Is the Biggest Lever


There is a common tendency to defer action until a carrier forces the issue. The challenge with that approach is that it removes flexibility.


As decommissioning accelerates, organizations that wait are more likely to face compressed timelines, higher costs, and fewer viable solution options. In contrast, those that plan ahead can evaluate alternatives more deliberately, align solutions to specific use cases, and sequence the transition in a way that minimizes disruption.


At this point, the question is not whether POTS replacement will happen, but how controlled the process will be when it does.


There Is Also a Cost Opportunity


While the transition is being driven by necessity, it also creates an opportunity to reduce ongoing spend.


Legacy copper lines are increasingly expensive relative to modern alternatives. Cellular and IP-based solutions typically offer lower monthly costs, faster deployment, and greater flexibility, particularly in distributed or evolving environments.


More importantly, replacing POTS lines often uncovers areas of unnecessary or outdated spend that can be eliminated as part of a broader cleanup effort.


A Structured Approach Matters


The most effective starting point is not selecting a replacement technology, but building clarity.


Organizations that move through this well begin by identifying where POTS lines exist, what systems they support, and what requirements need to be maintained. From there, they evaluate replacement options based on the specific needs of each location and application, rather than applying a single solution across the board.


This turns what could be a reactive project into a more strategic transition aligned to cost, timing, and operational priorities.


The Bottom Line


POTS replacement is no longer a low-priority item or a simple upgrade. It is a necessary transition driven by infrastructure changes that are already in motion.


Organizations that address it early can manage the process on their terms, reduce unnecessary spend, and avoid disruption. Those that wait are more likely to be forced into faster decisions with fewer options.
